John McCoy


Sports Broadcaster - Rugby League

 

"One of Australia's finest sporting historians"

 

From his start in Mount Isa in 1966, to becoming the doyen of Australian radio sports broadcasters, John McCoy never lost his passion and enthusiasm for Australian sport, and those who take part in it. As the caller for the first State of Origin in 1980, John's voice is synonymous with sport in Queensland and Suncorp Stadium. He covered sports with a flair, fairness and complete understanding to listeners from across the country. As a host of popular radio sports shows, John tasted success everywhere he went including being involved in the Commonwealth Games from 1982 through to 2006 covering a multitude of sports in the process. Credited as the first to use the term "Brisbane Broncos" and acting as Master of Ceremonies for Rugby League's Australian and Queensland teams of the century, John will be known for years to come as an ambassador and historian of Australian sport.

Inducted on March 3 2021 by the Hon. Stirling Hinchliffe Minister for Sport.
