Suncorp Stadium delivers the world’s smallest cheque for a big cause

Jonty Bush MP, alongside legends Wally Lewis and Gene Miles today presented the world’s smallest cheque to charity Hear and Say for $45,500 as proceeds of the Suncorp Stadium Annual Charity Golf Day.

The tiny cheque is in stark contrast to the large amount of more than half a million dollars the Stadium has donated to Hear and Say over the past 12 years.

Ms Bush, the local Member for Cooper, said she was delighted that Suncorp Stadium was giving back to the local community in such a big way.

“We all love Suncorp Stadium for the amazing events including their incredible line up of Summer concerts, but they really are amazing local citizens too,” Ms Bush said.

“Raising over half a million dollars for a local charity shows the consideration and commitment the Stadium shows towards causes within community.

“Supporting those affected by hearing loss makes Hear and Say an incredibly worthy recipient of the Stadium’s fundraising effort.”

Apart from the Annual Golf Day, the Stadium managed on behalf of Stadiums Queensland by ASM Global is very active in supporting charities and community groups across wider Queensland.

Each year the Stadium provides prizes for local auctions and raffles which help raise an estimated $400,000 for community groups.

On Christmas Day, the Stadium will again open its doors to provide a gourmet lunch for 200 of the lonely, disadvantaged, and homeless in the community with the help of Communify and venue caterers, the O’Brien Group.

Another regular date on the venue’s calendar is the annual 42 for 42 Challenge which assists Afghanistan veterans and their families.

Suncorp Stadium General Manager Alan Graham said the success of the Golf Day would not be possible without the generous support of all sponsors some of whom, like the King, have been involved since the beginning.

“The generosity and community spirit of our sponsors will continue to amaze me,” he said.
Football great and King of Suncorp Stadium Wally Lewis has had personal experience with the charity said it was an incredibly worthy cause.

“Hear and Say has a profound impact on those impacted by hearing loss – including my family - and it’s my pleasure to support them through the Suncorp Stadium Charity Golf Day,” he said.

“It’s an amazing day each year and the money raised goes to an incredibly worthy cause.”

Hear and Say’s CEO Greg Elpinston was hand to receive the donation on behalf of the charity.

“Hear and Say is honoured to partner with Suncorp Stadium which is making a difference for thousands of families and children across Queensland impacted by hearing loss,” Mr Elphinston said.

“We continue to be blown away by the generosity of our community and it enables these children to meet the world with the full force of their personalities and achieve their potential,” he said.

“We’re sincerely grateful to Suncorp Stadium for their support over the past 12 years in helping make these incredible outcomes a reality, and we look forward to continuing to change many lives in years to come.”

Hear and Say was founded and officially opened in Brisbane in 1992 and has been teaching children who are deaf to hear, listen and speak ever since.
