Ben Ikin encourages fans to make respect part of the State of Origin decider
Game 3 of the 2026 Ampol State of Origin series is coming to Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday 8 July, with Queensland and New South Wales set to meet in a winner-takes-all decider.
As fans prepare for one of rugby league's biggest nights, former Queensland State of Origin representative and Queensland Rugby League Chief Executive Officer Ben Ikin is encouraging everyone to help create a positive atmosphere by showing respect for fellow fans and if choosing to drink alcohol, doing so in moderation.
Through DrinkWise's Always respect, always DrinkWise campaign, supporters are being reminded that everyone has a role to play in creating a safe and enjoyable game-day experience, whether they're cheering from the stands, watching at a licensed venue or enjoying the match at home.
"I've spent most of my life around rugby league and one thing that's never changed is that footy brings people together. Whether you're at Suncorp Stadium, your local pub or crowded around the TV at home, Origin is about the shared moments people talk about for years afterwards.
“Everyone’s Origin experience should be a great one – so make sure you keep the focus on the moments that make the game special which means if you're choosing to have a drink, make sure it's in moderation and pace yourself,” said Ikin.
Recent DrinkWise research shows Queensland fans overwhelmingly support this approach, with 97% agreeing it's important that people drink responsibly at sporting events and 94% saying a sporting event can be ruined if people drink too much.
Supported by the National Rugby League, the Queensland Government, the New South Wales Government, NSW Police and support services including 1800RESPECT, No to Violence – Men's Referral Service and 13YARN, the Always respect, always DrinkWise campaign encourages fans to celebrate one of Australia's greatest sporting rivalries while helping ensure everyone enjoys a safe and positive experience.
