"An icon of television sports journalism"

Suncorp Stadium and the Hon. Stirling Hinchliffe welcomed an icon of television sports journalism into the Venue’s Media Hall of Fame Friday afternoon.

After 47 years working in journalism, Pat Welsh became the newest inductee into the prestigious group with the Minister for Sport making the formal induction in front of a who’s who of Queensland and Australian sporting identities.

Mr Welsh has been a hallmark of the sporting media landscape at Suncorp Stadium and abroad for almost 50 years.

Renowned for his Rugby League, Olympic and Golf Commentary, there’s barely a sport or major event Pat hasn’t covered or stamped his trademark wisdom on.

From Bathurst to the Melbourne Cup, the Ashes to the greens of Augusta, over the span of his illustrious career Pat has become one of Australia's top sports journalists, commentators and more recently, sports editors.

Mr Welsh has also covered 6 Summer Olympic Games (Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney, Athens, Beijing, Rio), 3 Winter Olympics (Nagano, Salt Lake City, Torino) as well as Commonwealth Games and Multiple World Cups.

The Media Hall of Fame recognises the contribution the media have played in the coverage of sport over many years at Suncorp Stadium.

Located on Level 5 of the venue outside the Media Suite – the Hall of Fame acknowledges the close relationship Suncorp Stadium has with the Media.

Established in 2006, Jack Reardon, George Lovejoy and Frank O’Callaghan were the inaugural appointees into the Suncorp Stadium Media Hall of Fame.

Steve Ricketts and Gerry Collins in 2014; Barry Dick and Wayne Heming in 2017; and the late great Billy J Smith in 2019 have since followed.

The most recent inclusions were made in 2021, when Jim Tucker, Ross Lawson, John McCoy and the late Paul Malone joined the illustrious group.
