Granite in exposed aggregate concrete

by Barbara Penrose

Viewed from certain points, Groundswell appears to be the pattern of shadows cast by a grid of invisible blocks.

Representing these shapes as if they were stretched over a sphere, the perspective lines in the paving recall the curvature of nature topography.

Solid rising forms are suggested then dissolved by the design as the viewer moves around it. Because of the surging energy associated with these grounds today and the natural watercourse that once ran beneath them, flow and swell are essential elements of the site.

This artwork is available to be viewed at all times on the Stadium's Northern Plaza at the far end of the precinct before you arrive at Caxton Street.
