"A legend of the Cauldron"

Referee and Journalist - Rugby League

Bernie Pramberg

Bernie Pramberg's connection with Suncorp Stadium spans more than half a century. His initial mark on the Brisbane sports scene was as one of the most respected Rugby League Referees in Australia during the 1970s. Pramberg was renowned for refereeing without fear or favour, refereeing three Brisbane grand finals and several interstate games before hanging up his whistle at the peak of his powers. In 1982, he became one of the big initial signings for The Daily Sun where his weekly column was a compulsory read for anyone wanting to know what was happening behind the scenes in the Brisbane sports scene. Pramberg's love of telling the story behind the story saw him take his talents to writing about AFL, horse racing and golf but it was in the Rugby League industry where he was best known and most admired. After switching to The Courier Mail, Pramberg started a column which recognised sporting identities often ignored by mainstream media. Deeply respected by the likes of Queensland icons Wayne Bennett, Des Morris, Barry Muir, Allan Langer and John Lang, Pramberg remains one of the most admired referees and journalists in the history of Rugby League in Queensland.
