"A fine writer and an ace news gatherer"

Sports Writer - Rugby League

Paul Malone

Paul Malone played a celebrated role in spreading the news of Suncorp Stadium's sporting gifts for almost four decades. And he did so with an engaging style and insight which delighted Queensland audiences and won the respect of hard-marking southern judges. After going to school in Cairns and starting his journalism career in Sydney, Paul came to Queensland as part of The Australian's sports team in the early 1980s. He joined The Courier Mail's league team in 1984 and soon forged a reputation as a fine writer and an ace news gatherer with a fine eye for the nuances of the sport. Paul covered more Broncos games than any other journalist and over 100 State of Origin games. His lively match reports and analysis played a key role in popularising the concept and making Queensland proud of a side which lifted the self-esteem of the entire state.
