"Dynamic, versatile media groundbreaker"

Journalist, Broadcaster and Media Manager - Rugby League

Tony Durkin

Tony Durkin began his journalistic career on regional papers in northern New South Wales, where he reported on everything from local government and magistrates' court to CWA meetings and sport. He also played rugby league in Inverell and Grafton, before becoming editor of the Grafton Daily Examiner. In 1980, Tony became associated with Suncorp Stadium when he moved to Brisbane as Queensland Editor of Rugby League Week. He would remain at the publication for 20-odd years, until he joined the Broncos as media manager. During his time at RLW he broke many big news stories, none more momentous than plans for a Super League. Tony became national editor of the magazine and was a judge for 'The Immortals', some of whom are commemorated in bronze in the Stadium forecourt. Durkin featured on a host of radio and television sporting shows, either as a co-commentator; sideline eye or analyst and was a panel member on the Queensland version of Channel Nine’s ‘The Footy Show'. Durkin edited the Brisbane Broncos magazine for 25 years, and in addition to his media work, gave his time generously helping players and fellow staff members with advice gleaned from his extensive experience in the code. Tony has also given plenty of his time to the Family of League Foundation (previously Men of League) and was a founding member of the Sunshine Coast Committee, in 2006.
